As the plant matures it forms a fast-growing upright crown unless regularly coppiced, creating a strong shape through the growing season.

Expect around 50–100 cm of new growth per year after establishment in good conditions. At maturity it typically reaches 8–15 m in height and 5–8 m in width. Allow room for a fast-growing upright crown unless regularly coppiced; soil, water, exposure and pruning all influence its final outline.

How to care

Plant in free-draining soil in a sunny, wind-sheltered site and protect young plants in hard winters. Water deeply through the first growing seasons and during prolonged dry spells later on. Top-dress with mature compost once a year in spring, keeping it clear of the stems. Prune in spring if a smaller bush with fresh juvenile foliage is wanted, allowing for strong regrowth.
