Royal Burgundy Japanese Flowering Cherry – Prunus serrulata ‘Royal Burgundy’

'Royal Burgundy' is a deciduous flowering cherry valued for its combination of pink blossom and dark foliage. Clusters of double flowers appear in spring, accompanied by young copper-red leaves that deepen to burgundy-purple.

The crown grows upright when young and becomes broader with age. In autumn, the foliage turns orange and red before falling, bringing another change of colour to the garden.

Ideal as a focal tree in a lawn, front garden or spacious mixed border. Its burgundy foliage provides a strong contrast with green shrubs and lighter planting.

It also suits informal rows and larger landscape schemes where spring blossom and seasonal colour are desired. Allow enough room for the mature crown to develop freely.

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Water thoroughly and regularly during establishment, especially in dry weather. Once established, provide additional water during prolonged dry periods and avoid waterlogging.

Apply a layer of mature compost once a year in spring, keeping it away from the trunk. If the soil is poor, use a suitable slow-release tree fertiliser according to the product instructions.

Little routine pruning is needed. Remove damaged or crossing branches when necessary, working in dry summer weather and avoiding heavy pruning.
