Expect around 15–30 cm of new growth per year after establishment in good conditions. For grafted standards, the stem height is already set at grafting; the crown develops above it. At maturity it typically reaches 3–5 m in height and 2–4 m in width. Allow room for a compact, spherical crown; soil, water, exposure and pruning all influence its final outline.

How to care

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Water deeply through the first growing seasons and during prolonged dry spells later on. Top-dress with mature compost once a year in spring, keeping it clear of the stems. Keep shoots emerging below the graft removed and lightly thin or shape the crown only when needed.
