Expect around 10–20 cm of new growth per year after establishment in good conditions. At maturity it typically reaches 1.5–3 m in height and 1–2 m in width. Allow room for a dense, upright shrub that gradually widens; soil, water, exposure and pruning all influence its final outline.

How to care

Plant in well-drained soil and avoid waterlogged ground. Water deeply through the first growing seasons and during prolonged dry spells later on. Apply mature compost or a slow-release evergreen fertiliser once in spring if soil is poor. Clip in late summer if a formal outline is wanted; established yew tolerates careful renovation.
