Butterfly Japanese Maple – Acer palmatum ‘Butterfly’

Butterfly Japanese maple has small green leaves edged in cream, often flushed with pink on new growth.

Fine branches form a small, lightly branching crown; the leaf display changes through the seasons before the tree reveals its winter outline.

Use as a delicate specimen in a protected border or container where the variegation can be seen up close.

Give the plant enough space and light to show its natural form.

Plant in humus-rich, well-drained soil in a sheltered place away from strong drying wind and hot afternoon sun. Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment and water again whenever the upper soil dries. Top-dress with mature compost once a year in spring, keeping it clear of the stems. Prune minimally, removing damaged or awkward branches only when necessary.
