Its branches make a dense, spherical crown above its graft, an attractive outline even when the deciduous leaves have fallen.

Expect around 15–30 cm of new growth per year after establishment in good conditions. For grafted standards, the stem height is already set at grafting; the crown develops above it. At maturity it typically reaches 4–6 m in height and 3–5 m in width. Allow room for a dense, spherical crown above its graft; soil, water, exposure and pruning all influence its final outline.

How to care

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Water deeply through the first growing seasons and during prolonged dry spells later on. Top-dress with mature compost once a year in spring, keeping it clear of the stems. Keep shoots emerging below the graft removed and lightly thin or shape the crown only when needed.
